This is a summary of AITP monthly meeting events and presentations since January 2005

January

Technical Track: Web Architecture Best Practices and Directions - Steve Alley will cover web architecture best practices with an eye on the future directions of Microsoft.  Steve discusses the Microsoft view regarding operating system/web server integration and overviews of email, database connections, security and threat modeling (including user identity) and development tools, etc.  This seminar will benefit students and technical managers as well as provide enough detail for web developers.

February

Professional Track: IT Employment Today, Tomorrow and Into the Future.  Gerry Ellis, Senior Associate Director of Career Services at DeVry University-Kansas City, will present a review of the recent state of the IT hiring market and a forecast of the short and long term future for employment opportunities from the perspective of a college placement professional.

March

Forces & Behaviors Inhibiting Quality - David Longstreet, Software Economist presenting: There is a basic psychological principle stating behaviors which are rewarded will be repeated. When a behavior is no longer rewarded it will eventually be extinguished. The adage what gets measured gets done is only partially correct. When there are measurements without consequences (or rewards) and/or what is being rewarded is different from what is being measured, then the wrong behaviors will be exhibited. To really understand an organization one must understand what behaviors are being rewarded.  When the wrong behaviors are rewarded, it is impossible to implement quality programs. The presentation will focus on behaviors preventing the implementation of quality programs.

April

Technical Track: Communication, Collaboration, and Portal Technologies - Speakers:  Karl Schulte (Burns & McDonnell) and Sean Abbott (Microsoft).  How can organizations take advantage of recent, emerging technologies such as Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and .Net to work well with their existing investment in applications and infrastructure.  Learn how to create new solutions that make managing and maintaining your organization easier instead of harder.

May

SQL Server 2005 What's New? Microsoft is preparing to release their next version of SQL Server next year. Bill Graziano will provide and overview and demonstration of key features of the product. Topics to cover include database mirroring, snapshot isolation, security enhancements, .NET framework hosting (CLR/VB/C# stored procedures), XML and T-SQL enhancements.
The Future of IT: Technology is always changing and so is the structure needed to control and support technology. What can we see in current tech trends and what can we find in some of the more interesting current literature that might help us define the IT Department of the future? Doug Allen will explore these and other clues to try to determine technologies and human roles that might be prevalent in the future of IT.
Wireless Network Security: Many organizations have delayed installing wireless networks because they don't think they are secure. Is that really a valid concern today? Join Fred Granville of FLG Networking Services, who will speak on the current state of wireless network security. He will discuss 802.11b, WEP, hacking tools, WPA and security standards. If you operate a wireless network, this presentation will either have you patting yourself on the back for your efforts, or running back to the office to upgrade your wireless security!
Change Management: Dr. Barbara Johnson provides us with proven approaches to managing change. Successful change management must be both participative as well as integrated with business requirements. A smooth transition is highly dependent upon the communication strategy.

Technical Track - The Misconception of Information Security: Co-presenters R. Loren Weeks and Philip M. VanMeerhaeghe remind us that security is not just the deployment of network appliances such as a firewall, antivirus software, or  backup procedures - those are simply tools.  Moreover, security is not just IT.  Security is a corporate way of life that should permeate the entire culture.  Security starts at the top. Learn what security is, what it is not, and what elements are involved in an information security management system (ISMS).

September

Technical Track: RFID Overview - Wayne Embry Presenting: Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) is not new technology. But as many revolutionary ideas the demand for better, faster and reduced cost, bring the opportunity to current technology. At a simple level, it is a technology that involves tags that emit radio signals and devices called readers that pick up the signal. RFID tags enable automatic, non-line-of-sight identification. RFID's implementation will evolve over time with applications driven by market and consumer demand.
